Amazon Signs Deal with The New York Times to Use Editorial Content in AI Platforms

The agreement includes NYT journalism, cooking content, and sports coverage from The Athletic for use in Alexa and Amazon’s proprietary AI models

Amazon Partners with The New York Times to Integrate Editorial Content into Its AI Ecosystem

Amazon has entered into a licensing agreement with The New York Times Company, allowing the tech giant to incorporate the newspaper’s editorial content across its artificial intelligence platforms, including the Alexa voice assistant and Amazon’s proprietary AI training models.

Announced Thursday, the deal represents the first time the Times has licensed its content specifically for use in generative AI applications. The partnership encompasses not only the newspaper’s journalism but also material from NYT Cooking, the Times’ food and recipe platform, and The Athletic, its sports-focused publication.

In a statement, The New York Times said the collaboration would bring its content “to a variety of Amazon customer experiences,” offering reliable information through multiple channels. According to Bloomberg, the agreement includes the use of summaries and short excerpts across Amazon services and for internal AI model training.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. However, Times CEO Meredith Kopit Levien emphasized that the agreement aligns with the company’s long-standing principle that “quality journalism deserves to be paid for.”

“This deal reflects our clear strategy to ensure our work is properly valued—whether through commercial licensing or the protection of our intellectual property rights,” Levien stated.

This partnership comes months after the Times filed a lawsuit in 2023 against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging the companies used millions of the newspaper’s articles to train AI chatbots without compensation. Both firms denied the allegations.

By teaming up with Amazon, The New York Times is signaling a willingness to collaborate with tech companies—provided the partnerships respect journalistic value and rights.
